2006 Alma Rosa El Jabali Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay.
Richard Sanford shows his longtime talents with this lavish, ripe single-vineyard Chardonnay. Limpid, orange-driven aromas presage honeyed fig and citrus, with a bit of dry wood presence and a pleasing touch of sweetness on the palate, matched by firm, minerally bite. Balanced, well-defined Chardonnay from a parcel Sanford has farmed since 1983.

2006 Kunin Pape Star Central Coast Red Wine.
At a time when Rhone-style California wines seem to come with Chateauneuf-like price tags, Seth Kunin's tribute to that famed appellation remains a terrific find. Kunin eschews new oak to let the fruit, primarily from Santa Ynez's Ballard Canyon, shine through, and does it ever. It leads with buoyant Grenache berry notes, countered by rustic earthy tones from Mourvedre and a lift from a dose of Syrah. Rich and soft through the finish, it's as hearty as can be, but not jammy.
